Electrical Design Engineer

Description:
This role requires the candidate to thrive in a high paced environment and will have an integral role in advancing the next generation of electrically powered vertical lift aircraft.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Define: Generate conceptual layouts for critical systems. This includes high voltage systems to drive BLDC motors and low voltage systems to control key elements of the avionic and vehicle management systems. It is desired for the candidate to specifically take ownership of analog & digital circuits (MOSFETs, op-amps, switching regulators, gate drivers, microcontrollers, SPI, I2C, etc) for high power BLDC drive motors as other systems such as electro-mechanical actors. The candidate will participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, and lead-time limits. The engineer will define key requirements and take ownership of them through the design life-cycle.
Do: The Electrical Design Engineer will also take the lead designing a myriad of critical components that are the basis for the Butterfly Aircraft’s electrical propulsion systems. Areas of focus include BLDC motor drivers and the associated electrical components. The end application will require extreme levels of reliability and fault tolerance and therefore the systems and components designed by the electrical engineer will need to adhere to aerospace best-practices for flight critical vehicle management systems. Familiarity with DO254 and DO178 is desired. The ideal candidate will have a hand in developing new systems from the ideation stage and seeing them through to a flight-worthy component. Thus, the role will require experience designing, prototyping, and testing multiple iterations of the development PCBs and be competent in the skills and tools needed to undertake this effort.
Key Responsibilities:
• Start-to-finish hardware ownership: Specification, architecture, design, simulation, schematic, layout supervision, prototype, validation, and manufacturing of circuit boards. Thoroughly document design requirements, calculations, power budgets, validation results, etc. Rapidly iterate as design requirements and system features mature.
• Circuit board design: Develop the specification, architecture, and design of electronic circuits for motor control including consideration of processor requirements and integration, system timing and bus loading. Work hand in hand with the embedded systems lead and software counterparts to ensure success of the integrated system. Design hardware, source components, develop schematics, manage layout, and test prototypes to validate hardware.
• Testing and validation: Identify core test requirements and balance test time with test coverage. Interact with various design, manufacturing, and firmware teams throughout the project. Establish clear, concise hardware test plans, and identify necessary test sequences and functional verification testing.
Secondary Responsibilities:
• Establish great working relationships with team members and cross functional teams.
• Create electrical panel schematics and work closely with builders to checkout wiring and quickly correct mistakes.
Intrinsic: The role will require constant flexibility and a level of comfort working in a rapid-prototype environment. The projects and assignments will vary from week to week, so the candidate should ideally have robust experiences to draw from (e.g. Aerospace, Electric Vehicle development, Motorsport/Formula One) in order to operate effectively in this environment. The role will include interfacing with engineering management, our customers, certification authorities, operations, procurement, external suppliers, and fellow engineers.
Required Qualifications:
• Master’s degree from an accredited university in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline with at least 5 years of professional experience in aerospace or a related field (i.e. electric vehicle development); or equivalent experience/combined education.
• Excellent circuit board design skills and an analytical mindset with a track record of demonstrated success developing actual products in a development environment.
• Experience in PCB schematic creation.
• Experience in electrical equipment selection and hardware integration/abstraction.
• Experience in electrical panel design and layout.
• Competent in electrical fundamentals.
• Familiarity with C, C++, Python, and/or Labview
• Well versed in the fundamentals of serial communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, Bluetooth, DP, etc.)
• Experience with designing and testing to meet DO-160 Environmental Qualification requirements is desired.
• Experience with HW design that meets certification requirements for lightning strike and HIRF is advantageous.
• Experience overseeing and/or preparing electrical system compliance test plans and reports in support of aircraft certification, along with direct experience working with the FAA and/or FAA DERs, or past experience as an FAA electrical systems DER would be highly desirable.
